ŽOS Trnava has completed the modernisation of 40 Lgs-type freight wagons for the Slovak logistics company TT-TRANS. The Lgs-series flat wagons (originally used for container transport) have been upgraded to carry bulky agricultural goods. This delivery marks the latest milestone in a multi-year programme to refurbish and repurpose 201 older freight wagons for new uses in rail cargo service.
Modernisation Timeline
- 2024: Project launched – 141 wagons modernised in the first year.
- 2025: Second phase – 40 additional wagons delivered (now completed).
- 2026: Planned final phase – 20 wagons to be converted, bringing the total to 201 modernised wagons.
Flexible Design for Agricultural Cargo
Each wagon has been fitted with a wooden floor and end-wall panels to accommodate voluminous agricultural loads. Thanks to these modifications, the flat wagons can securely transport bulky materials such as straw bales without risk of the cargo shifting or falling off. Crucially, the conversion is designed to be reversible: the wooden floor sections can be removed when needed, allowing the wagons to revert to their original container-carrying configuration. This modular approach ensures the wagons remain versatile for different types of freight.
International Significance and Adaptability
TT-TRANS – a family-owned transport company also active in agriculture (including the production of straw pellets) – will deploy the modernised wagons to expand its capacity for agricultural bulk transport. The upgraded Lgs wagons can be used across borders, underscoring the international reach of the project. This initiative demonstrates how older rolling stock can be given a second life and adapted to meet today’s freight transport demands. By creatively refurbishing existing wagons, ŽOS Trnava and TT-TRANS highlight a sustainable, cost-effective strategy to address modern logistical needs while leveraging proven equipment.
